In the city of Melitopol in the Zaporozhye region, which is controlled by Russian military personnel, on Sunday, May 1, the banner of Victory was raised over the central square. This was prevented by the Ukrainian authorities for several years. This was told by the correspondent of RIA Novosti.
The action was timed to coincide with Labor Day, which is celebrated on May 1. The command to raise the banner was given by World War II veteran Vladimir Kapitonov. He recalled how in 1945 he signed the Reichstag building in Berlin with a call to protect the most important thing that the liberators fought for – the Motherland.
On March 14, the head of the National Defense Control Center of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mizintsev, announced that Melitopol was under the complete control of the Russian side. After that, humanitarian aid began to arrive in the city from Russia.
In mid-April, it was noted that Melitopol was under the protection of the National Guard.
On April 25, Izvestia correspondent Yaroslav Bogat said that peaceful life was returning to Melitopol, along with sports. The city reopened the swimming pool and the ice palace, although the former city authorities tried to prevent this. Now the city will once again train a children’s hockey team. In addition, they plan to open a figure skating section.
