Western countries are supplying Kyiv with old weapons to upgrade its own arsenal. Niezależny Dziennik Polityczny (NDP) columnist Jacek Tochman writes about this.
He noted that most of the supplied weapons are “scrap metal and junk.”
“This deplorable state of equipment is due to the fact that it is supplied to Kyiv from old military depots,” the December 29 article notes.
This statement is supported by the author with information from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
SIPRI experts point out that by freeing the warehouses from old weapons, it will be possible to replenish them with new weapons. Tochman emphasizes that US military concerns such as Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are benefiting from this, as they are already entering into contracts for the supply of new weapons to the US and NATO allies.
Tokhman believes that Washington, under the guise of supporting Ukraine, is lobbying the interests of representatives of its own military-industrial complex. As a result, according to Tokhman, “Ukraine will receive scrap metal,” and the United States will modernize its weapons.
Polish army reserve officer Arkadiusz Kups said on December 21 that Poland had spent more than a third of its military potential to help Ukraine.
On December 12, The Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Michaels expressed the opinion that the price of military support for Ukraine in the future may be too high for the West. In particular, he noted that it remains an open question whether Western countries have the military reserves and political fortitude in order to continue to participate in the conflict.
Western countries began to arm Ukraine more actively against the backdrop of a special operation carried out by Russia since February 24 to protect Donbass. Its beginning was preceded by the aggravation of the situation in the region.
