Doctors in the city of Vidnoye near Moscow saved the life of a 40-year-old man with a rupture of the esophagus, which occurred after overeating. As the press service of the regional Ministry of Health told on July 14, the condition threatened the patient with a fatal outcome.
It is noted that the man was admitted to the hospital with suppuration of the pleural cavity, complaints of retrosternal pain and vomiting. To eliminate the consequences of inflammation, he underwent a complex operation that lasted eight hours.
“The first step was to remove the affected part of the esophagus. Then installed drainage in the pleural cavity. For several months, the patient will be fed through a gastrostomy. The operation was a success,” said Konstantin Khadikov, Deputy Chief Physician for Medical Affairs.
The man has now been discharged and is doing well. In a few months, he will undergo additional surgery to create an artificial esophagus. A new organ will be formed from part of the intestine or stomach. It is assumed that after this the patient will be able to eat independently.
Earlier, on March 13, in the Moscow region, surgeons performed a unique operation to remove a giant tumor on a newborn, which accounted for almost a third of its mass. The operation was very difficult, since the formation was adjacent to the rectum and a large neurovascular bundle. As a result, the doctors had to cut out the tumor literally by a millimeter.
