Department of Social Justice to Conduct Elderly Survey: Minister
Minister said that the Department of Social Justice will start the survey of the elderly soon. R. Bindu said. Through this, an attempt is made to understand the problems of the elderly in the state. It is a part of every home. The Minister also said that he intends to form an Elderly Commission for the elderly. The minister was inaugurating the awareness day against violence against senior citizens at Ayyangali Hall, Thiruvananthapuram.
The minister informed that scientific training will be provided to the care givers who take care of the elderly. A systematic law will be prepared for caregivers. Exact criteria for the institutions employing them will also be implemented. Elderly clubs have been formed in many local institutions to provide mental recreation to the elderly. Steps will be taken to establish such systems all over Kerala. The minister said that the trend of throwing away the elderly, including parents, is getting stronger in the society, just like throwing away a glass after drinking tea. It is a time when human tenderness, love and kindness are waning.
All the 16 old age homes under the government in Kerala are functioning well. The minister said that the aim is to make them model houses. The minister released a handbook covering elderly services and schemes at the function. Along with this, the minister released the video. At the event, Transport Minister Adv. Antony Raju presided. Social Justice Department Principal Secretary Sharmila Mary Joseph, Director Chetan Kumar Meena, Planning Board Member Prof. Mini Sukumar, Thiruvananthapuram Sub Collector Aswathi Srinivas, N. Ali Abdullah, Amaravila Ramakrishnan, Dr. Ansar, senior citizens, officials, students etc. from various centers were involved.
