According to the complaint, India subsidizes more than half of its farmers for wheat production. The letter was sent to President Biden by 28 members of the US Congress. The letter from members of the US Congress and Senate was also supported by US White Associates.
While the World Trade Organization (WTO) has proposed a subsidy of 10 per cent, the Indian government subsidizes farmers with about half of the value of production for rice and wheat crops. The letter states that American manufacturers are expressing their opposition to this.
The letter concludes by saying that a case should be filed against India and that immediate action be taken to reverse the trend of non-compliance with the recommendations of the World Trade Organization. The letter was addressed to US Trade Representatives Catherine Thai and Agriculture Secretary Tom Wilsack.
In the letter, the Congress members point out that the US has been pressuring India to revise the support price plan, but to no avail.
Eighteen senators sent a letter to Wilsak and Thai requesting that the Biden administration continue to prosecute India’s domestic support for farmers. About a month after it arrived, a letter was sent to members of the grassroots on January 13.
This is not the first time the US has complained against India. India had earlier raised a similar issue in the WTO Agriculture Committee.
Chandler Goule, CEO of the National Association of Wheat Growers, also said that India must adhere to international commitments and not create unjust gains through its domestic production and distort world trade.
