India who fought and lost.. out of the Hockey World Cup

India’s story in the Hockey World Cup is over. Even though they fought brilliantly till the end in an exciting match, they ended up losing. They lost a shootout against New Zealand in a must-win match on Sunday (January 22). The fans’ hearts were broken as the Indian team went home in the ongoing Hockey World Cup 2023 without even reaching the quarter-finals. While some people are praising Odina for fighting brilliantly, others are criticizing him saying that hockey should be retired.

Both teams did not score a single goal in the first quarter of the match. Shortly after the start of the second quarter, Indian player Lalit Kumar opened the account by scoring the first goal. After a while, Sukhjit scored the second goal. At the stage when India was leading 2-0, New Zealander Sam Lane scored the first goal for the team. At half-time, India was leading 2-1.

Indian player Varun Kumar scored the third goal in the third quarter. After a while, New Zealand scored two consecutive goals. This led to a shootout round with the scores of both teams equal.

Indian captain Harmanpreet scored the first goal in the shootout round, while Russell scored the first goal for New Zealand. Rajkumar Paul scored the second goal for India. Findlay scored for New Zealand.

Indian player Abhishek who came to score the third goal missed the goal. A New Zealand player scored a goal. With this, India trailed by 2-3. After that, Shamsher for India and Sam Lane for New Zealand both missed the goal. Sukhjit who came next gave India the 3rd goal. New Zealander Sami Hiha missed the goal to level the scores at 3-3.

After that, the Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh was injured while trying to block the goal scored by the New Zealand captain. Pathak replaced him as goalkeeper. New Zealander Findlay scored a goal to give their team the lead. Rajkumar (India) then scored another goal to level the scores. Sukhjit missed the fifth goal for India. But, New Zealander Lane scored the fifth goal. As a result, India lost and left the Hockey World Cup.
