Meta’s Instagram platform plans to launch a text-based app to compete with Twitter.
The company is currently testing the project with a number of celebrities and influencers, and it has made it available unannounced to a selected number of creators for months.
The app will be separate from Instagram, but will allow people to link accounts, and it may be revealed as early as June, according to Leah Habermann, who teaches social media and influencer marketing at the University of California, according to Bloomberg.
The chaos caused by Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter prompted some users to look for alternatives, creating an opportunity in the market.
“Historically, we know that Meta prefers sampling and feature renewal over other apps, based on what they expect to be popular with users of its apps,” Habermann said.
She indicated that Musk talked about transforming Twitter into a comprehensive application, with many features other than media publications.
“Based on a meta track record of borrowing from other platforms, they’re likely to find success with all that expertise they collect,” Habermann added.
