The folk music Peruvian is in mourning. On Thursday, May 12, the Ministry of Culture reported, through its social networks on Facebook and Twitter, about the unfortunate death of the artist Irma Ruth Rodriguez Nunez at age 59 for reasons that have not yet been revealed.

“Together with his group La Familia Rodríguez, he contributed to the Peruvian songbook for several decades”, highlighted Mincul’s publication on the lineage of the artist, who stood out for the use of the bass drum.

Who was Irma Rodríguez Núñez?

Born in 1969, Irma Rodríguez Núñez was the daughter of the folklorist Alberto ‘El Flaco’ Rodriguez and the singer Dina Nunez de Rodriguezfirst interpreter of the famous huayno “Valicha”.

At just 6 years old, together with his parents and siblings (Evi, Mamina, Marcia, Gabriel, Ramón, Irma and María Jesús) the Cusco group La Familia Rodríguez, in 1975. Later his other three brothers would join Maritza, Jesus ‘El Viejo’ and Jose ‘Pancho’.

Of all of them, it was María Jesús Rodríguez ‘La Misky’ who obtained the greatest opening on television as the first presenter of “Miski Takiy”, a program created in 2001 as a window to expose traditional and contemporary Andean music, where Irma Rodríguez Núñez occasionally appeared.

Her skill with the bass drum, a heavy percussion instrument, made her be recognized as ‘Queen of the bass drum’ by some portals specialized in folk music.
