There are two types of personal data theft of which the referred person may have been a victim:
shoulder surfing (peeping over the shoulder): as its name says, it consists when someone observes the Personal Identification Number (PIN) or any other personal data in a public place and later uses it to steal your money.
Skimming: It consists of the theft of card information used during an operation to reproduce or clone the credit or debit card for fraudulent use.

To avoid being a victim of PIN theft or having your credit or debit card cloned, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) gives you the following recommendations:
Demand that the charges be made in front of you and with mobile terminals.
Hide your PIN when you enter it to prevent people nearby from seeing and memorizing it.
Check that the terminals do not have any added device, such as a magnetic stripe duplicator.
Prevent someone else from seeing the screen and what you are doing: try to have your back to the wall.
Use two-step verification: even if the thief has the data, they will need a second key.

If you use an ATM, check that the slot where you insert your card does not contain any foreign object; also check the part where the money comes out; if you see something strange, better not use it. Don’t ask for help from people you don’t know.
Move the ATM keyboard before using it and check that it is not overlappingbecause that’s also how they steal the PIN.
Remember that if your card is cloned or stolen, you must contact the emergency line of your bank and request its cancellation so that they stop using it.
