Brazilian canoeist Isaquias Queiroz, 31, finished sixth in the final of the men’s C1 1000 race at the World Canoeing Speed Championship, this Saturday (26th), in Duisburg, Germany, with a time of 3min48s860.
As a result, it did not guarantee a spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics – the top five in the race qualify. There are also continental events where the Brazilian can win a chance to compete for another podium — holder of four Olympic medals, Isaquias tries to go to Paris in search of tying or surpassing sailors Robert Scheidt and Torben Grael, the only Brazilians with five.
They took the podium from Czech Martin Fuksa, with 3min45s124; the Romanian Catalin Chirila, with 3min45s958 and the German Sebastian Brendel with 3min46s581. In fourth, was the Polish Wiktor Glazunow, with 3min46s605. Ahead of the Brazilian, the Hungarian Balazs Adolf finished the race with 3min47s828.
The Brazilian started the race strong, finishing the first part in third, behind Balazs and Chirila. However, he soon lost pace, falling further behind at the 500 m and 250 m mark. Despite an effort in the last quarter, he finished 1s032 behind the Hungarian.
Isaquias has already won the World Cup seven other times and has 14 medals.
The athlete from Bahia returns to the lanes this morning, at 10:44 am, for the semifinals of the C2 500 category, alongside Jacky Godmann, also a partner in the Tokyo Olympics. If they advance, the final will take place this Sunday (27) in the morning, at a time to be defined.
In the C2 500 category, the eight fastest teams —there are nine pairs in the final— also guarantee a place in the next Olympic Games. In total, 162 Olympic quotas in sprint canoeing and slalom are contested in Duisburg.
Olympic berths are allocated to national Olympic committees, not athletes specifically.
In parananoagem, Brazil won a double on the podium with Fernando Rufino de Paulo and Igor Alex Tofalini in first and second place, respectively, in the VL2 200 category. The American Steven Haxon took bronze.
The canoeing events at the Olympics will take place from 6 to 10 August 2024 in Vaires-sur-Marne. The paracanoe competitions will take place from August 28th to September 8th next year.
