The Italian railways have been hit by a cyber attack today. Travelers can’t buy tickets all day. According to Italian media, it concerns Russian hackers.
Big problems for the Italian railways today. Due to a cyber attack, all physical sales channels have been blocked. The counters and self-service machines no longer work, as a result of a so-called crypto blocker. This is a computer virus that can block and steal personal data from the database of affected companies.
According to Italian media, the hackers would have demanded 5 million euros from the Italian railways, to be paid within three days. The railways claim that they have stopped part of the sale as a precaution.
Russian hackers
It is unclear who exactly is behind the attack, according to the newspaper La Republica if the attack is the work of Russian hackers, other media keep it on cyber criminals. The fact is that Italian train passengers had great difficulty catching the train. Today it was allowed to buy a paper ticket from the conductor the old-fashioned way.
Last week the Italian railways also had major software problems, the high-speed network between Florence and Rome was down for a long time. There were delays of up to five hours across the country. Italian railways declined to say whether those problems were also the result of a cyber attack.
The Russians are attacking Ukraine from various fronts, including digitally. Several Ukrainian government websites are down, according to Ukrainian media a cyber attack. Dave Maasland, cybersecurity expert, explains:
