The Italian media Corrie della Sera reported that the information about withdrawing from the project was officially announced three days ago. Later, Italian official sources withdrew from the project, reports the international news agency AFP. There were already rumors that the project would be withdrawn.

Italy will become a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative by 2019. Italy sided with China for the project, rejecting all concerns raised by the US. Italy is also the first western country to be part of this massive project. Meanwhile, no details have been released.
The deal with China caused major political crises in Italy. The current Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, has been critical of the plan since then. After taking over as Italy’s prime minister last year, Giorgia Meloni made it clear that Italy would withdraw from China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Meloni attributed this to the fact that Italy would not benefit from the project.
The agreement signed in 2019 between China and Italy for the project is due to expire in March 2024. It naturally had to be renewed. This is how Italy has given a letter to China showing that it is withdrawing from the project.

She also said that if Italy abandons the project at the G20 summit in Delhi in September, it will not compromise its relations with China.
