Jan Ullrich turns 50 today
He is known for his sporting successes. The cyclist Jan Ullrich made history in 1997 when he became the first German Tour de France won. Numerous other brilliant athletic achievements followed.
After being discovered by talent scouts in the GDR, Jan Ullrich’s professional career began at SC Dynamo Berlin. In 1990 he moved to RG Hamburg and took part in the Rad-Bundesliga. In 1993 he became amateur world champion, and in 1996 he made his tour debut with Team Telekom at the Tour de France and achieved second place in the overall ranking.
A year later, he became the first German to win the race. In total, he finished the Tour de France in second place five times. Other awards followed, such as gold and silver medals at the 2000 Olympic Games.
In 2007, the cyclist announced the end of his career. From then on he largely withdrew from the public eye. He lived with his family temporarily in Switzerland and Mallorca. In 2010, he also revealed that he was suffering from burnout syndrome. In 2018 he completely crashed with drugs and alcohol, after which he began withdrawal.
In 2019 he went public again for the first time and reported an improvement in his health. Over the course of his career, Ullrich was repeatedly confronted with doping allegations. He addressed this in 2023 by creating a comprehensive Doping confession and reported on his addiction problems.
On November 28, 2023, a documentary series entitled “Jan Ullrich – The Hunted” was released on Amazon Prime, in which the story of the cycling legend is retold.
