Footage of the commander of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) Serhiy Volynsky (“Volyn”), who surrendered from the territory of the Mariupol plant Azovstal, appeared on Friday, May 20, at the disposal of Izvestia.
“The entire 36th brigade is here with me. There are no more marines on the territory of the plant,” Volynsky said.
It is known that Volynsky has been involved in the conflict in Donbass since 2014.
Earlier that day, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov, announced the complete liberation of the territory of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. He said that since May 16, during the Russian special operation, 2,439 Azov militants have surrendered (criminal cases have been initiated against the group in the Russian Federation) and military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, blocked on the territory of the plant. At the same time, the Izvestia correspondent announced the exit from the Volyn enterprise.
On May 19, it became known that the deputy commander of the Ukrainian radical nationalist group “Azov” Svyatoslav Palamar with the call sign “Kalina” came out and surrendered from Azovstal.
On May 18, captured militants who left the territory of Azovstal told the representative of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the Red Cross workers that there were no manifestations of aggression against them. The Ukrainian military assured that they are treated well: they are fed and provided with assistance. The next day, the Ministry of Defense published a video of the contents of those who had surrendered from Azovstal.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the Ukrainian military who will leave Azovstal will be guaranteed life and decent treatment.
The liberation of Mariupol is one of the stages of the special operation to protect the Donbass, which Russia launched on February 24. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated significantly due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR.
