On January 7, adviser to the acting head of the DPR, Yan Gagin, said that the Russian army had entrenched itself in the southeast and east of Vugledar. He explained that Ugledar is a small town, most of which is occupied by an industrial zone and two mines.
At the same time, the acting head of the republic, Denis Pushilin, said that taking control of this settlement would provide Russian troops with access to the Red Army and Kurakhov directions. According to Pushilin, this could radically change the balance of power in the NVO zone.
