Algerian runner Jamal Sajati won his first Olympic medal in his career, after coming third in the 800m race at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sajati (25 years old) won the bronze medal after coming third and recording 1:41.50 minutes behind the race champion Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1:41.19 minutes), and his runner-up, the Canadian world champion Marco Arop (1:41.20 minutes).
Sajati deliberately stayed at the back of the pack on the first lap, but on the second he launched a strong attack that was not enough to pass Wanyonyi and Arop.
Sajati won the silver medal in the race at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, and broke the national record of his compatriot Tawfik Makhloufi at the Paris Diamond League, recording 1:41.56 minutes. Five days later, at the Monaco Diamond League, he achieved a second remarkable victory and improved his record, recording 1:41.46 minutes.
Sajati also previously recorded the best time of 2024 in the 1000m race, when he covered the distance in 2:13.97 minutes during the Johannesburg meeting in South Africa.
Sajati had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but was forced to withdraw after contracting the coronavirus shortly after arriving in the Japanese capital, which forced the organizers to put him in quarantine at the time.
