The Japanese team topped the overall standings of the World Judo Championship Abu Dhabi 2024, with 5 gold medals, two silver and two bronze, as the competition reached its third round, a tournament whose 37th edition is being hosted by the UAE at the “Mubadala Arena” in Zayed Sports City until May 24 of this year.
Japan’s Ryoma Tanaka outperformed his compatriot Takeshi Takeoka, winning gold and silver medals respectively in the under-66 kg category. The bronze went to Finland’s Lukas Saha, and Georgia’s Vazha Margvelashvili.
Hidayat Heydarov from Azerbaijan won the gold medal in the men’s under 73 kg weight, Japan’s Tatsuki Ishihara won the silver, and the bronze went to Mongolian Ankhazaya Lavargal and Swiss Nils Stemp.
Korea’s Mimi Ho won the gold medal in the women’s under-57 kg category, Canada’s Christa Deguchi won the silver, and the bronze went to Japan’s Momo Tamawki and Canada’s Jessica Klimite.
The championship competitions will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, with the men’s under 90 kg competitions, and the women’s under 70 and 78 kg competitions.
Aram Gregorian, the UAE judo national team player, is competing in the under-90 kg competition, with ambitions of achieving a result that will enhance his chances of obtaining a qualification ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
So far, 5 players from the judo team have reserved their seats in the Olympics: Narmand Bayan (under 66 kg), Talal Shafeli (under 81 kg), Dhafer Aram (under 100 kg), and Omar Maarouf (over 100 kg). The player, Bashirat Kharudi, weighs under 52 kg.
