At the age of 77, Joan Manuel Serrat announced his farewell from the stage “pushed by the pandemic.” He stated that he will retire after the long tour that he plans to start in April and that will end in December 2022. “I have decided to say goodbye in person. I did not like feeling fired by a plague, “he told the Spanish newspaper El País.
“The confinement to which this still-ongoing pandemic led us to make it impossible to continue the profession, to sing in public. And, also, due to the need to recover family life, fulfill intimate and necessary matters. Following the norms of Ecclesiastes: there is a time for everything. Oh, and I didn’t decide to quit. They have been the events that occurred after that fall of
Joaquin Sabina (February 12, 2020) that forced us to leave a tour. Then came the COVID … The difficulties were distancing me. He was increasingly away from the activity he did, and although not from feeling, the truth is that he was also inevitably away from people. For this reason, I decided to go to the most natural place to do it, with the public in front of it, full of gratitude and joy ”.
Serrat commented that the tour that begins in April in
New York it will also be an opportunity to meet friends. “That is why I propose the tour in such a way that the common places, the friends who remain and those who left, the food, the drinks, the landscapes and the memories have a great weight. Above all, I want to say goodbye to them personally ”.

Although his last concert will be in
Barcelona, the musician announced that it will include South America. “What would be of me without Latin America! … I want to make a show during which the smile of the people does not fall from the lips … There will be 20, 30 songs, and I do not know what they will be. I will be accompanied by my usual team. Even I’m going to be the same! Colleagues? I do not know. Many things could be done ”.
The author of ‘Mediterráneo’ summarized his career as a journey in which he dedicated time to what he likes to do. “I live, to date, a glorious time, in which the worst happened in my childhood and adolescence. My children have not gone to war, and I could see my parents die. To date, I have felt like a well-loved and well-lived man. Love has treated me very well, my children are healthy and I have five grandchildren who love me and I love them. Oh, and Yuta (Tiffon, his wife) ”.
Serrat considers it ruled out to step on a stage again, although he will continue to make music. “I will play and compose at home, it is possible that I will record an album. But I will not return to the stage. In the confinement I noticed the trees, the birds. And above all I read a lot. And I will say goodbye not to the French, but as it corresponds ”.
