In a job interview, both the interviewer and the interviewee are tasked with determining if the candidate is the right fit for the position. However, there are some questions that should not be asked in an interview due to their inappropriate or discriminatory nature.
Below, we share five of them.
1. Religion
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states that people cannot be asked questions about religious affiliations. Therefore, no interviewer should ask you what beliefs you have, much less decide if they hire you for that reason.
2. Age
If you are age 40 or older, the Employment Age Discrimination Act protects you from being asked your age. Remember that it is illegal for them to ask you this question, as well as when you were born, your birthday, when you graduated from school, or even your birthday.
3. Weight and height
No one in a job interview can ask you about your height or weightsince no one should decide if they should give you a job taking into account these qualities.
4. Previous salary
Although there is no federal law that prevents employers from asking about past wages, there are state laws that prevent it. Such is the case in places like California and New York.
5. Arrests
Interviewers also cannot ask a person if they have ever been arrested. And it is that they cannot refuse to hire someone simply because he has been arrested.
The reason for this is that an arrest is not proof that the person has committed a crime.
