The night of the MTV Video Music Awards had more than one surprise and what was said during the week was confirmed. Johnny Depp made his public comeback in one of the most internationally recognized musical events.
The actor used technology to attend tonight’s gala and his face could be seen next to the body of an astronaut —replica of the MTV VMAs Moonman trophy— located on the ceiling. The goal was to give a message.
“I just want you to know that I am available for birthdays, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes… anything you need,” adding, “You know what? I needed the job,” said the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star.
After this, Depp received laughter and applause from the public, but there was also a sector that criticized his appearance tonight.
“Honestly f**k the VMAs for including Johnny Depp. Amber’s entire crowd of industry peers are rooting for her abuser. Makes me sick. The industry has not changed at all. I’m not surprised, but I’m disappointed,” wrote a viewer of the MTV VMAs.
As it is recalled, the trial of Depp and his ex-partner Amber Heard polarized the followers of both artists, especially after a Fairfax County (Virginia) magistrate determined that the actress defamed the actor in an opinion article published by Washington Post in which she considered herself “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”
“But it was defamation when Amber said that institutions protect men accused of abuse… he has literally been found guilty of 12 counts of domestic abuse and is being celebrated by the most powerful people in the entertainment industry so that the whole world see it. I had the rare point of view of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse”, argued another follower of the MTV VMAs gala.
