The Jordanian national football team turns the page on its historic achievement in the Asian Cup, in which it came in second place to the Qatari team, and opens another one, the title of which is the dream of reaching the World Cup finals for the first time.
The journey of the “Nashama” in the decisive third round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, begins today, by facing its guest, Kuwait, at the Amman International Stadium.
Jordan, which achieved a great result in the Asian Cup at the beginning of the year, when it reached the final match and lost to host Qatar 1-3, is looking forward to an unprecedented World Cup ticket, and erasing the pain of falling in the continental play-off in 2014.
The ambitions of the Jordanian national team, supervised by Moroccan Jamal Al-Salami, seem great in snatching one of the two direct qualification cards for the World Cup, from the second group that includes South Korea, Iraq, Oman and Palestine.
In its first match against Kuwait, the Jordanian national team is armed with home advantage and the experience of the trio Musa Al-Taamari, Yazan Al-Naimat, and Ali Alwan, in addition to its friendly victory last Thursday over its guest, North Korea, 2-1, after a 0-0 draw.
Jordan defender Abdullah Naseeb (Diarra) told Agence France-Presse: “We are training and preparing well with coach Al-Salami, and we are looking forward to an ideal start by achieving victory over the Kuwaiti team, before moving to Malaysia to face the Palestinian team in the second round of the qualifiers.”
He added: “We realize the size of the responsibility placed on our shoulders, and we are striving hard to please the Jordanian fans and achieve the great goal of qualifying for the World Cup. The mission will not be easy, but we have the determination and confidence to continue on the path towards the dream that has become close to reality.”
Al-Salami took over the task after his compatriot, Hussein Ammouta, who moved to coach Al-Jazira of the Emirates, after leading Jordan to the top of Group Seven at the end of the second round of the qualifiers, on goal difference ahead of the Saudi national team.
Jordanian fans are counting heavily on the French Montpellier striker, star Musa Al-Taamari, who has scored 21 goals in his international career.
Jordan has excelled in recent matches, as it has not lost in the last seven matches, and succeeded in achieving a 3-0 victory in the last match in the Asian Cup qualifiers.
