Arsenal midfielder, leader of the English Premier League, Italian international Jorginho extended his contract on Thursday with the London club.
Arsenal did not reveal the duration of the new contract, but media outlets indicated that it would be extended for one year until 2025.
Jorginho, 32 years old, has become a key player in Spanish coach Mikel Arteta’s squad since joining the Gunners on an 18-month contract from London’s neighbor Chelsea.
Jorginho played 35 matches in all competitions this season and scored one goal against French club Lens in the Champions League.
Arsenal leads the league standings with 83 points, one point ahead of defending champion Manchester City, which has a game in hand, two stages before the end of the tournament.
The player, who rose to prominence with the Italian club Napoli between 2014 and 2018 before moving to Chelsea, where he won the Champions League, the European League (Europa League), and the European Cup with his country’s national team, is seeking to add more titles to his cabinet.
“Winning as much as possible and enjoying the moment because this is very important to me,” he said about his hopes for the future after extending his contract.
He continued, “Because if you are in a place where you are not having fun or are not happy, it is difficult. So the future goal is to be in this situation, happy and achieve as much (of titles) as possible.”
Arteta expressed his happiness at extending Jorginho’s contract, saying, “Jorge is a very important player for our team, a role model with great leadership skills and a unique way of playing that makes everyone around him better on the field.”
Arsenal will play its next match against Manchester United on Sunday in the 37th round before hosting Everton on May 19 in the final stage of the tournament.
