A court in Florida ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay almost $1 million to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for filing an unfounded lawsuit against her and 30 others. This was reported by The New York Times on January 19.
According to the publication, the judge invalidated Trump’s accusations that Clinton and her team undermined his reputation during the 2016 presidential election. In a ruling in the case, U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks wrote that the lawsuit should not have been filed at all.
“His inadequacy (claim, approx. – Ed.) as a legal statement was obvious from the very beginning. No reasonable lawyer would file it,” he added.
Middlebrooks also noted that Trump has often used the lawsuits as a weapon against his political and business opponents, thereby undermining the credibility of the judiciary.
Trump and his lawyer Alina Khabba now have to pay Clinton $973.9 thousand, adds Gazeta.Ru.
In November, the former secretary of state filed a lawsuit against Trump demanding $1.06 million from him and his lawyers for unsubstantiated allegations of trying to influence the results of the 2016 election. This amount was supposed to cover the costs of legal expenses, as well as serve as compensation for her and her assistants.
Litigation between politicians began in March 2022 after Trump accused his opponent of spreading false information about his collusion with Russia and an attempt to change the results of the 2016 presidential race. In September, the lawsuit was dismissed because it was filed too late and lacked evidence.
