Sanjeevarayaswamy temple in Thippayapalle village has something special. Here every year before the Sankranti festival, a Pongal program is held for the Lord. That too, only men cook and offer Pongal to the Lord. This is a tradition that comes from generations. Continuing the tradition, a grand Pongal program was held this Sunday too. Men from each house brought rice, jaggery and other puja materials in a new basket and reached the temple. Pongal was cooked in the temple premises and offered to the Lord as an offering.
This temple has another feature. Women are not allowed inside the gully. Only girls are allowed. Women who want to visit God… have to get a wand from outside. There is a rule that only men should eat the prasad offered as an offering to Sanjeevarayaswamy. All the people of the village abroad reach this annual Pongal event.
A story related to this temple is also popular. In the past, a monk used to roam in the village of Tippaya Palle. The elders of that village say that he was not a woman who ate boxed food, and while leaving this village, he named Anjaneyaswamy as Sanjeevarayaswamy and enshrined it with bijaksharas on a rock. It is said that as per the instructions of that monk, the guard wall was built instead of the temple gopuram. The villagers say that everyone in the village is happy because of following Swami’s instructions.
