with photosSinger Skin (55) of the British rock band Skunk Anansie stole the show when she received a ribbon from King Charles this week. She appeared at the ceremony in a coat with 30,000 crystals, which according to the designer took 600 hours of work. Spectators on social media feasted.
Deborah Dyer, as she is really called, received the so-called OBE title for her years of service in music. King Charles presented the corresponding medal in person at Windsor Castle. Striking, because he turned out not to know her band. “He said, ‘How could I have missed your great band? Everyone tells me that your beautiful band is so beautiful’. He was very sweet,” the singer said afterwards.
It sounds strange to honor someone for work you don’t know, but the king doesn’t decide who gets a ribbon. People are nominated and then experts make a decision. One thing is certain: Charles will never forget her now.
Huge soles
Skin was in front of him in a creation by designer Robert Wun, officially called ‘The Rain Coat’. The coat, partly made of silk, contains 30,000 Swarovski crystals, representing droplets that glitter in the night. They were applied by hand, in total the creation required more than 600 hours of work, Wun writes on Instagram. The outfit also includes a matching umbrella from the Dutch brand Senz, but Skin did not wear it.
In addition to her outfit, Skin’s make-up was also done to perfection: make-up artist Daniel Kolaric applied black eyeshadow from top make-up artist Pat McGrath. As special as all of that was, the most attention was paid to Skin’s boots with huge platform soles at the front and a narrow heel at the back.
“What a picture,” one person wrote on Twitter alone, resulting in 32,000 likes. Well-known comedian David Baddiel quipped, “I don’t know exactly what’s going on in this picture, but it looks like a guy in a uniform getting some kind of award from a queen.’
