Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić attended the commemoration of the 31st anniversary of the formation of the First Brigade of the Stari Grad Sarajevo Police and paid tribute to the fallen members of the Brigade at Liberation Square – Alija Izetbegović, reports Anadolia.
Addressing the audience, Komšić said that this is a generation that had the honor and privilege of being a participant in the time when Bosnia and Herzegovina was declared an independent state.
“As time passes, I find less and less words. I have nothing to say to this generation of mine, my comrades, we have seen and been through everything. One important fact, which we may not be aware of as people, is that we are a generation of members of those who had the honor to live the day when Bosnia and Herzegovina was declared independent. Perhaps we as people are not aware of what role history has assigned us and how honorable the role of that entire generation is. Unfortunately, many lost their loved ones in the defense of the homeland,” said Komšić.
According to him, the deployment of the First Brigade of the Stari Grad Police was a great encouragement for the citizens of besieged Sarajevo.
“That line-up in this place, 31 years ago, above all gave great morale to all the defenders of Sarajevo. The generations to come can be proud of their parents, ancestors and fellow citizens,” emphasized Komšić.
He added that this act was, at the same time, a warning to the enemy.
“It is a permanent obligation to preserve the memory of the historical role of people, who were carried by courage, will and determination to defend their family, their city and their homeland even at the cost of their own lives. Unfortunately, if we forget what happened then, we have a great chance of if it happens again,” said Komšić.
