That’s itThe incident where the cliffs broke on the Rami base camp filled Manipur with intense tragedy. Large amounts of boulders were shattered by the incessant rains. Along with the boulders it became muddy as the landslides broke in the stream. The bodies were stuck in that mud. The scene of the accident turned horrific. Upon receiving the information, the authorities immediately launched a rescue operation. Seven bodies were exhumed from the mud. 19 people were rescued and taken to hospital. Another 45 people were lost in the crash.
The incident took place in the Mega Train project site area near None. The largest railway line project connecting the northeastern states is under construction here. However, there is opposition to the construction of this project from various quarters. Security forces were deployed at the site to ensure that the project works were not disrupted in the background. The jawans on duty are setting up a makeshift camp there. Landslides broke out on a similar base camp.
The victims included captain rank officers, jawans, railway personnel and laborers, officials said. The rescue operation is ongoing. Heavy rains have hampered relief efforts. A rescue team has already reached there and started rescue operations. A few more teams have left.
Manipur CM Biren Singh expressed deep regret over the incident. An emergency meeting was arranged with the authorities. Ordered immediate relief measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the incident. He spoke to Manipur CM Biren Singh and tweeted that he was aware of the situation there. The Center has promised to co-operate in all possible ways. ‘All my thoughts are with the families of the dead. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured, ”Modi tweeted.
