American actor Richard Belzer, best known for his role as John Munch in Law & Order: SVUpassed away at the age of 78. A friend reports this on Sunday The Hollywood Reporter and colleagues on social media.
Belzer played the character John Munch between 1999 and 2016 in more than 300 episodes of the series, which is still running and can be seen several times a week in the Netherlands on Net 5 and RTL 8. He also played the character in several other series, including The X Files. In 2015 he was seen as a similar man in the Netflix hit Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
The actor died at home in Bozouls, France, says his good friend and writer Bill Scheft The Hollywood Reporter. He said he had several health problems. “I feel blessed to have known, admired and worked with you,” she writes Law & Order: SVUstar Mariska Hargitay on Instagram. ‘How lucky are the angels that you come to accompany them. I love you so much, now and forever.’
Law & Order: SVU has been on the air since 1999 and is the longest running American series of all time. Rapper Ice T (65), who has been there since the second season, was honored last week with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His buddy and colleague Hargitay, who plays Olivia Benson from the very beginning, gave the speech.
