Chennai: Indian cricket team opener Murali Vijay from Tamil Nadu has announced his retirement from international cricket.
Right-handed batsman Murali Vijay has played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and nine T20Is for the Indian team. He last participated in the Test match against Australia in Perth in 2018.
Murali Vijay made his debut in the 2008-09 Test against Australia in Nagpur. In late 2019, he played first-class and List A cricket for Tamil Nadu. In terms of professional cricket, Murali Vijay last played for Chennai Super Kings in IPL T20 2020.
Murali Vijay scored 3,982 runs in 61 Test cricket matches at an average of 38.28. This includes 12 cents and 15 half-centuries. Meanwhile, he added 339 runs in 17 ODIs and 169 runs in 9 T20 Internationals.
He had contributed well for the Chennai Super Kings team in the IPL series. In the 2010 season, he scored 458 runs for Chennai Super Kings with a century and 2 fifties. This included a blistering 127 runs against Rajasthan Royals.
In a post on Twitter, 38-year-old Murali Vijay said, “I am retiring from all forms of international cricket. I would like to thank Board of Control for Cricket in India, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, Chennai Super Kings and Chemblast Sanmar Club for giving me the opportunity.
I will explore new opportunities in the world of cricket and the business side of it. There I will continue to participate in the sport I love and challenge myself in new and varied environments. I believe this is the next step in my journey as a cricketer. And looking forward to a new chapter in my life.”
