In Andhra Pradesh, the festival of Sankranthi means chicken race. It’s hard to imagine Godavari districts without chicken races for Sankranti! No matter what the judgments of the courts and the actions of the police are.. the competition will not stop. For this Sankranti festival too, chicken races are going on in different districts of Andhra Pradesh. In both Godavari districts, Guntur and Krishna districts, boards are put up in the name of Sankranthi celebrations, but chicken races are being held inside.
In Jangareddygudem mandal Lakkavaram, T.Narasapuram and Nidamarru mandal Mandalaparri in Eluru district, the swords tied to chickens are being thrown into the ring. Also Gundata is being played loudly in Jalivudi and Chataparru. Chicken races have also started in Tanuku, Iragavaram in West Godavari district, Nidadavolu, Undrajavaram and Peravali mandals in East Godavari district.
In some areas, the organizers have made security arrangements with private bouncers at the weights of the chicken races. People flock in large numbers to watch the cockfights. And, in the name of chicken racing, Rs. Crores are changing hands. The police and revenue personnel stopped the conduct of cockfights in Krishnapuram of Buttaigaudem mandal. In Nizampatnam of Bapatla district, the volunteers of the committee organizing the chicken race rushed on the roads with sticks.
