Cycling fans in Poland will not forget one particular start of Bodnar – in 2017 our competitor won the time trial during the Tour de France. At this year’s championships, the 38-year-old Bodnar was doing his best, but the leaders had clearly better times. The only representative of Poland lost less than four minutes to the winner. In Stirling, Bodnar was lonely – although Poland was supposed to field two players, Filip Maciejuk was suspended for 30 days almost just before the world championships for causing a serious accident in the Ronde van Vlaanderen played four months ago.
In Friday’s time trial, the fight for gold took place between two riders. The first kilometers belonged to Filippo Ganna – the two-time world champion showed that he hoped to regain the title he lost a year ago. The Italian had the best time after 12 kilometers, but Remco Evenepoel came to the fore later in the distance. The representative of Belgium gained a dozen or so seconds of advantage over Ganna, and although 4 km before the finish line, the Italian managed to reduce the difference to just over 10 seconds, Evenepoel did not let go of the chance.
Joshua Tarling won the bronze medal. The Briton was initially only two seconds behind Evenepoel, but later found himself in a situation where he was in no danger of making up for the top two or losing a place on the podium.
The World Cup in Glasgow will run until Sunday. Polish fans are waiting above all for Sunday’s women’s mass start race, in which Katarzyna Niewiadoma will be among the favorites. A total of six of our cyclists will start at the start.
