Manchester City wrote its name in the history of English football after becoming the first team to win the league title for the fourth time in a row, by defeating its guest, West Ham, 3-1, yesterday, in the last round, ending the season with a two-point lead over Arsenal.
City entered its final match with a two-point lead over Arsenal, after winning on Tuesday its postponed match with Tottenham 2-0. His victory against West Ham made the Gunners’ 2-1 win over visiting Everton not enough to give the London club its first title since 2004.
City concluded the season without any defeat in its last 35 matches in all competitions, since its loss in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at the hands of Spanish Real Madrid does not count, as it was on penalties.
With its eighth successive victory over West Ham, which was playing its last match, under the leadership of its Scottish coach, David Moyes, City confirmed its dominance in the Premier League, by winning the title for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. The team of Spanish coach, Pep Guardiola, will have a chance to win the double when it faces arch-neighbor Manchester United, next Saturday, in the final of the cup competition.
City could not have hoped for a better start to the match, as they opened the scoring after less than two minutes with a wonderful shot from outside the area by the brilliant Phil Foden.
Foden added the second goal in the 18th minute with a cross pass from Doku. Foden raised his tally to 18 goals in the league this season, and 27 in 51 matches, in all competitions.
City conceded a wonderful goal from a backhand shot by Ghanaian Mohamed Quddus (42), and in the 59th minute, Spaniard Rodri succeeded in adding the third goal with a well-placed shot from outside the area.
