Manchester United announced on Monday that striker Mason Greenwood will leave Old Trafford following an investigation into allegations of attempted rape of which he was acquitted.
Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 when allegations surfaced against him on social media, was charged with attempted rape, behavior control and assault last October.
He was scheduled to stand trial on November 27, 2023, but all criminal charges against him were dropped last February.
The club said in a statement: All concerned, including Mason, realized the difficulties he faces in resuming his career with Manchester United, so it was mutually agreed that it would be more appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to reach this result.
In a statement to British media, Greenwood said he had made mistakes, adding: “I did not do the things I was accused of. Today’s decision was part of a participatory process between me, Manchester United and my family.”
He concluded: The best decision for all of us is to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, so that my presence will not be a distraction for the club.
