Christmas cake, cancer children and a mega-influencer – people like to spend a little more money. For a good cause.
But apparently it wasn’t all that good. In Italy, the Milan public prosecutor’s office has officially started an investigation against influencer Chiara Ferragni. The 36-year-old is being investigated on suspicion of fraud!
The reason: When marketing a specially designed Christmas cake (“Pandoro Pink Christmas”), Ferragni was generous and gave the impression that a large part of the proceeds would go to a hospital for children with cancer in Turin. But apart from a small sum from the cake manufacturer Balocco (50,000 euros before sales started), nothing arrived.
The Pandoro, designed for the confectionery manufacturer Balocco, went on sale in November 2022. This is a traditional Italian Christmas cake. It actually costs 3.70 euros. It was sold for around 9 euros for the supposedly good cause
The Italian Chiara Ferragni is one of the most famous and powerful influencers in the world. 29.4 million people follow the mom and businesswoman (own companies, own shoe collection, own reality show) on Instagram, marveling at her glamorous glittering world with husband Fedez (34, rapper and influencer), their two children Leone (5) and Vittoria (2) – and the millions she brings in every year.
But the ideal world suffered a major crack: it was said that Chiara Ferragni put the money she earned with the “Pink Christmas” cake into her own pocket. In any case, the cancer hospital in Turin didn’t receive any tired marks from her within a year.
According to the investigators, it is now a matter of suspicion of unfair competition. The question that needs to be clarified is whether the millionaire influencer (her fortune is estimated at around 10 million euros) personally enriched herself from the cake for the supposedly good cause.
The Italian antitrust authority has already more than A fine of one million euros was imposed on Ferragni, and the manufacturer of the cake also had to pay a fine of several hundred thousand euros.
Chiara Ferragni spoke with tear-filled eyes
on her Instagram page in a video about a “communication error”, announced that she wanted to avoid such “misunderstandings” in the future and would directly make a donation of one million euros for a children’s cancer ward in Turin. According to the Italian newspaper “ L’Unione Sarda”, the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital has now received the donation. Nevertheless, the investigation continues. Ferragni said: “I am calm because I have always acted in good faith. I am sure that the ongoing investigations will also reveal this.” If legal proceedings are brought, the Ferragni case could be costly. And it’s not just about money, but also about your image.
