Violence erupts in Meghalaya after former militant shot dead by police Simultaneously the Chief Minister threw a petrol bomb on the personal residence on Sunday. However, fortunately no one was injured in the incident. Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma was confined to his official residence after the bombing. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Home Minister Lakmen Rimbui resigned on Sunday, taking moral responsibility for the violence in the state.

Meanwhile, Rimbui has called on Chief Minister Sangma to hold a judicial inquiry into the assassination of General Secretary of the Prohibited Hinniperape National Liberation Council, Cherriesfield Thangkiev, who surrendered. In his resignation letter, Rimbui said he was shocked by the police shooting of Thangkiev illegally at his residence.

‘I ask you (CM) to immediately relieve me of the responsibilities of the Home (Police) Department. Tangkiev’s murder should be investigated freely and impartially, ‘he demanded in a letter to the CM. CM Sangma expressed shock that the Home Minister was not aware of the incident. Authorities said Rimbui had accepted the resignation.

Protesters pelted stones at several places. Assam police officials have advised people not to go to the state in the wake of violence in Meghalaya. Special DGP GP Singh tweeted that it was not safe for the people of Assam to go to Meghalaya at this time.
