Meghan Markle wins legal battle against media outlets over letter to her father

Meghan markle received a special Christmas present from the English press. The former actress won a legal battle against journalistic media, after these publish a letter written by her to her father, Thomas Markle, without her consent.The Duchess has not had contact with her father since May 2018, when she married Prince Harry.

Over the Christmas weekend, The Mail on Sunday and Mail Online reported that Meghan Markle won the legal battle against them. The Duchess of Sussex’s complaint was given by the publication of excerpts from a letter that she had written to her father in 2018. For this reason, the interpreter claimed a privacy and copyright infringement.

Previously, the publisher Associated Newspapers Limited, which owns both outlets, tried to appeal Markle’s victory.

On Sunday, December 26, a notice at the bottom of the front page of The Mail on Sunday read: “The Duchess of Sussex wins her copyright infringement legal case against Associated Newspapers for articles published in The Mail on Sunday and Mail Online ”.

“The Court determined that Associated Newspapers infringed his copyright by publishing excerpts from his handwritten letter to his father in The Mail on Sunday and in Mail online. Financial compensation has been agreed “, it is also read in the newspaper.

Meghan Markle’s case against the English press

The Mail on Sunday published in February 2019 an information note entitled Meghan’s moving letter to her father. The article contained excerpts from the duchess’s handwritten letter. It comprised of five pages addressed to her father, Thomas Markle, with whom she no longer has a relationship. It was Thomas who would have given the material to the newspaper.

In the same year, Prince Harry’s wife sued Associated Newspapers Limited over the publicationfor improper use of private information, copyright infringement and violation of the 2018 Data Protection Act.
