Srinagar. People’s Democratic Party president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday refused to contest the assembly elections and said that a farce is being staged in the name of holding elections. In the name of elections, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are being made to dance like monkeys, which is not right.
Speaking further, Mehbooba Mufti said that if elections are to be held, then do so, if not, then don’t hold them, but there should be no drama in the name of elections. Reacting to the visit of the Election Commission and the possibility of holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti said that these elections should have been held six years ago. It is a matter of shame that the democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are being violated.
Mehbooba Mufti said that a tamasha is being played in the name of assembly elections. An attempt is being made to make the people of Jammu and Kashmir dance like monkeys by beating the election drum. The way Jammu and Kashmir is being treated since 2019 does not befit any democratic country. Elections are a normal process, but in Jammu and Kashmir it has been made a tamasha.
Refusing to contest the assembly elections herself, Mehbooba Mufti said that I do not know about others, but I have already said that I am not going to contest the assembly elections. I contested the assembly elections at a time when we had our own flag, our own symbol, our own constitution, our assembly could make laws, at that time our assembly was the most powerful assembly in this country.
