Lionel Messi is likely to miss at least two games for Inter Miami after suffering an ankle injury in the Copa America final, the US team’s coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said Tuesday.
The American team announced on Tuesday that Messi had suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle, and that his fitness would be assessed periodically as his rehabilitation progresses.
Inter Miami hosts Toronto FC on Wednesday night and Chicago FC on Saturday night.
Messi, 37, was left in tears during Argentina’s 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final on Sunday after collapsing in the 64th minute of the match.
He immediately looked to the Argentina bench after falling, and remained seated on the ground for a few minutes before taking off his right shoe and walking slowly off the pitch. He was then seen covering his face and crying in his seat.
Cameras later showed him on the bench with a severely swollen right ankle.
In an Instagram post on Monday, Messi said he was feeling well and hoped to return to action soon.
Miami is second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.
