On March 24, 2023, the Ministry of Rural Development issued a notification regarding the Rural Job Guarantee Program for the financial year 2023-24. According to section 6 (1) of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) 2005, wage revision has been undertaken. The new wages will come into effect from April 1. The increased wages range from Rs.7 to Rs.26 per day. In terms of percentage, wages of laborers will increase by 2 percent to 10 percent.
In terms of value, the wage increase in Haryana is the highest at Rs.357. Earlier it was Rs.331. On the other hand, in percentage terms Rajasthan has seen a record increase. It was Rs.231 per day in the financial year 2022-23 and now it has reached Rs.255. MNREGA (mgnrega wages state wise) provides employment guarantee to poor people in rural areas of the country. Compulsory work for 100 days per year. The government provides 100 days of work in the financial year to the unemployed workers. However, it is noteworthy that in the financial year 2023-24 Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh will be the lowest at only Rs.221. Earlier it was Rs.204 and it was increased by Rs.17 to Rs.221. Also Karnataka, Goa, Meghalaya, Manipur have low wages. According to March 9, 2023 calculations, 5.97 crore families are working under the tenure guarantee scheme. Summer has the longest working days. The aim of this scheme was to support the poor families in the villages when there was no work.
