Microsoft has once again set its sights on Zaragoza. The company plans to launch a data campus in the Centrovía industrial estate, located in La Muela, in Zaragoza. A business initiative that would entail investment and employment figures similar to the first campus recently announced by the company in the Recycling Technology Park (PTR) in Zaragoza: around 2.2 billion euros and 300 direct jobs once launched.
These are the figures that are being considered after it was announced that this data campus in La Muela has been declared of Autonomous Interest with General Interest at the Governing Council held today. These investment and employment data have not been confirmed by the company, but it is estimated from the information provided about the campus that they will be similar to those of the project announced for the PTR, which was also declared of Autonomous Interest on November 8 of this year. anus. However, initially, and as it is carried out in several phases, it is estimated that the initial investment will amount to approximately 365.3 million euros in each of the campuses.
The new Microsoft data campus is part of the Azure network expansion that the company has throughout the world and that, currently, is expanding in Spain and, specifically, in the Aragonese community as the main focus to host the centers.
For now, what has emerged about this second data campus is that it will be located in the Centrovía industrial estate in La Muela. Specifically, it will consist of several buildings that will add up to Built area of 25,000 square meters. For its construction, the generation of between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs is expected.
The impact on the economy will be 6% of GDP in the period 2026-2030
The project will be undertaken in several phases -a period of ten years is contemplated until it is fully completed-, in the different plots in which the buildings will be installed, whose main function will be the data processing and storage, also housing the equipment for this activity. There will also be an office area and associated services.
The company will use in these facilities 100% renewable energy in 2024 in favor of greater sustainability of its activity, in addition to contributing to reducing the carbon footprint of the data campus in 2030.
The installation and launch of this data campus not only has striking figures in terms of investment and direct jobs. The data provided by the company indicates that its activity will have a impact on the economy of Aragon of 6% of GDP in the period 2026-2030. Regarding job creation, it is estimated that it will experience growth of between 2% and 6%.
This data campus is the second that Microsoft has completed in Aragon, although the company does not rule out – in fact it is more than foreseeable – the launch of a third data center also in the Aragonese community.
While the company details the third campus, it continues to advance in the implementation of the first, located in the PTR of Zaragoza, for which some actions have already been carried out, such as the purchase of land worth 24.5 million euros. An operation that also received authorization from the Government Council as the plots are owned by the Government of Aragon.
Specifically, in that operation, Microsoft acquired a first plot in the PTR with an area of 257,813 square meters and a second plot of 318,753 square meters.
