Mikron JSC is working around the clock to supply chips for foreign passports. Yulia Burkova, director of public relations, told Izvestia about this on February 3.
“Now the demand for chips, as well as for all our products, is growing rapidly. We are adjusting delivery schedules accordingly, reconfiguring technical processes for new domestic suppliers, increasing capacities, and continuing to ship chips for international passports. We are now working around the clock, in an enhanced mode,” she said.
On the eve of the portal “Gosuslugi” temporarily stopped accepting applications for the issuance of new passports, which contain an electronic storage medium. It is explained that this is due to technical reasons on the side of Goznak.
The press service of Gosznak pointed to an increased volume of applications for the personalization of foreign passports in recent months, in connection with which the need for microcircuits that are built into the form of a foreign passport has significantly increased. They expressed the hope that after the completion of the adjustment, the rhythm of production and personalization of foreign passports would be restored within a month.
In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov linked the suspension of applications for a new generation of international passports at Gosuslugi with technical problems. He urged Russians to “keep it simple and use ordinary passports.”
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that if there is an application for a foreign passport with an electronic carrier and an urgent need to leave as soon as possible, it is possible to issue a foreign passport for 5 years upon payment of the state fee.
