In a recent interview for the podcast ‘Speak Serious’ led by journalists Mónica Delta and Santiago Gómez Peruvian actress Mónica Sánchez reflected on her experience publicly supporting the campaign “No to the revocation” of the former mayor of Lima, Susana Villarán. During the conversation, the interpreter shared her disappointment upon learning the origin of the funds used for said campaign, a fact that subsequently unleashed criticism and ethical questions towards the former mayor’s management.
Mónica Sánchez speaks out about Susana Villarán
Mónica Sánchez, who supported the cause at the time, described what it was like to face the revelation about the funds coming from companies involved in corruption cases. “What happened to us with Susana Villarán was really devastating because you place your trust in someone who you believe represents values and ethics that identify you, but you realize that he falls into the same game that you were supposed to fight,” said the actress.
At another point in the interview, Mónica Sánchez also addressed the situation currently faced by Susana Villarán, who was sentenced to preventive detention in 2019 after being accused of receiving illicit money to finance her campaign against the recall. The actress expressed empathy for the former mayor, although without exempting her from responsibility.
“I was very sad, I had the opportunity to ask him. We weren’t close people, but he had all my respect and appreciation. I am very sorry that a woman of her age has to spend these years in this way, but there is a political responsibility,” said Sánchez, underlining the importance of assuming the consequences of one’s actions.
Finally, Mónica Sánchez reflected on how the situation could have been handled better to avoid the negative impact on those who supported the campaign. “I would have loved it if, at the time, she had the courtesy to express a public apology, especially to those of us who gave our all for her,” he said.
The actress expressed that an apology would have allowed Villarán’s individual actions to be separated from the people who supported his management, avoiding their association with the corruption case that surrounds her. “I would have avoided years of people installing an identity in their heads that has nothing to do with me,” he added.
