Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court has ordered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who died in the suspension bridge collapse accident in Morbi, Gujarat.
Background of the accident: A 233-meter long cable-stayed bridge across the Machu River in Morbi, Gujarat, built during the British rule, collapsed on October 30 last year. 135 people on the bridge drowned in the accident. Many were seriously injured.
The Morbi city police registered a case and investigated the accident. A police investigation revealed that Oreva Group, which was awarded the contract to repair the bridge for Rs 2 crore, did not carry out the repair work properly. Following this, the absconding managing director of Oreva Group, Jaishuk Patel, surrendered in court on January 31. The police submitted a 1,200-page charge sheet in the court in connection with the case.
Court hearing: A bench of Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sonia Kogani and Justice Sandeep Bhatt passed the verdict today. In this, Oreva Group has been ordered to pay Rs.10 lakh each to the families of those who died in the accident and Rs.2 lakh each to the injured within a period of 4 weeks.
