Marcelo Ebrard, the foreign minister of Mexico, reported that the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Elon Musk, executive president of Tesla, will shortly communicate by telephone to talk about the businessman’s interest in building a plant in Mexican territory.
“There will be a call from Elon Musk and the President of the Republic and I will confirm the date of that call,” said the foreign minister, after a meeting with members of the National Council of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of his country.
The reporters asked the official about the location where a new gig factory would be built, because the state of Nuevo León and Hidalgo have raised their hands so that the investment is made in their respective territories.
The chancellor replied that he preferred wait for the businessman and AMLO to communicate.
“I would not want to advance that information because it corresponds to him… in that call that issue will be discussed and then, we will know, but the important thing is that very soon we will have confirmation that this company that is so important and that is very close to the electromobility that we are promotingsince it has chosen Mexico to increase its presence in the coming years,” he said.
The issue in Mexico has aroused interest in an important way because there has been talk that it could be a investment of about $10,000 million dollars.
The candidates so far are Nuevo León, which has among its advantages its proximity to the US. among other points, and Hidalgo, which is in the interest of the government that it be built there due to its proximity to the new Felipe Ángeles airportwhich looks desert since its construction and could have more passengers with a plant like the one Tesla intends to build.
Ebrard commented that Tesla is thinking of installing an ecosystem of companies, since his idea “is not going to install a plant, but in which states are the ones that supply us and what kind of services we are going to need such as logistics and of another type”, due to to what 152 companies in Mexico have a supply relationship with Tesla.
