Eminent lawyer and former union minister Shanti Bhushan passed away. He breathed his last in Delhi on Tuesday (January 31) at 7 pm. He (Shanti Bhushan) is 97 years old. He has special recognition as a lawyer who raised his voice against corruption. He became prominent in the news as a lawyer who argued against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the Allahabad High Court in 1974. Shanti Bhushan argued on behalf of Raj Narayan.
Shanti Bhushan is known as a champion of civil liberties. Shanti Bhushan was born on 11 November 1925 in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was shocked by the news of Shantibhushan’s passing. The Prime Minister said that his efforts in the field of law and for the poor will be remembered forever. Many dignitaries including President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi have condoled the death of Shanti Bhushan.
★ After the ‘Emergency’ in the country in 1975, Shanti Bhushan served as the Minister of Law in the Janata Party government formed under the leadership of Morarji Desai. Worked as a minister from 1977 to 1979.
★ Founded NGO ‘Centre for Public Interest Litigation’ in 1980. The organization has gained distinction by filing public interest litigations on various issues in the Supreme Court.
★ Shantibhushan was active in Congress(O) before joining Janata Party.
★ Joined BJP in 1980. He resigned from BJP after six years.
★ Shanti Bhushan played a key role in the formation of ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ in November 2012.
★ Shanti Bhushan’s son Prashant Bhushan is also a prominent lawyer in the Supreme Court.
