Punjab. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi from Ludhiana West assembly constituency of Punjab died after being shot under suspicious circumstances on Friday night. The MLA injured by the bullet was brought to DMC Hospital late in the night, where he was declared dead. However, the MLA’s family claims that he shot himself by mistake.
The family members told Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja that “He (Gurpreet Gogi Bassi) accidentally shot himself and the bullet went through his head. After being shot, he was immediately taken to the hospital where doctors declared Gurpreet Gogi brought dead. His body has been kept in the mortuary of DMC hospital.” Apart from this, the DCP said that the cause of death will be known after the post mortem report comes.
Let us tell you that Gurpreet Gogi Bassi joined AAP in 2022 and defeated two-time former Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu during the Ludhiana Assembly elections. His wife Sukhchain Kaur Gogi (Gurpreet Gogi Bassi) also contested the municipal corporation elections, but lost to Congress candidate Inderjit Singh Indi. In August 2024, Gurpreet Bassi Gogi broke the foundation stone of a pipeline project in Budh Nala for which he had laid the foundation stone in 2022.
Gogi had expressed disappointment over the delay in the project and Speaker Sandhwan had promised strict action against any hindrance in the sanitation project in response to the AAP MLA’s complaints. Before his demise on Friday, he also visited the ancient Shitala Mata temple and promised the devotees that he would take action against the gang of thieves who stole silver from the temple two days ago.
