Spaniard Rafael Nadal claimed his 89th career title after defeating Maxime Crissy 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 in the Melbourne Tennis Championships final on Sunday.
At least the world number six, who participated in his first tournament in the last five months due to injury, has won one title in every WTA season since the 2004 season.
Nadal, who has not played a match since last August before participating in this tournament and was infected with the Corona virus last month, has not won any title in Australia since 2009, when he won his only Australian Open title, after defeating Roger Federer.
The Spanish player appears in good condition before participating in the Australian Open, which may witness the absence of the Serbian title holder, Novak Djokovic, who is awaiting the outcome of the hearing that will determine whether he will be able to participate in the tournament or not.
“I feel special and fortunate to be here again,” Nadal said in an on-court interview.
“I came back from some difficult moments in terms of injuries, so I couldn’t be happier. To be back with a cup in my hand means a lot to me.
