These generic drugs are generally available at a much lower price than over-the-counter drugs. The formula is the same but the companies that produce them are different. That is why the central government has already set up these Pradhan Mantri Jana Aushadhi Kendras to ensure that people buy medicines at high prices by bringing these generic medicines. The government is making many efforts to create awareness among the people about the use of these generic drugs. As a part of this, new rules have been brought by issuing orders to doctors to prescribe generic medicines to patients. Doctors have warned that they should prescribe cheap generic medicines to the patients who come to them, otherwise action will be taken against the said doctors. It has been clarified that if necessary, their license will also have to be suspended. In this regard, the National Medical Commission has issued new regulations in the name of Registered Medical Practitioners.
In 2002, the Indian Medical Council issued regulations that every doctor in the country should prescribe generic drugs to patients. However, it does not specify what action should be taken against the doctors who prescribe drugs of their choice. Due to this, the doctors are prescribing the medicines of their choice and the pockets of the patients are becoming thinner. In this context, the National Medical Commission has recently announced that the NMCRMP Regulations-2023 have come into force in place of those regulations. It also details the action to be taken against doctors who do not follow the rules. According to this, it is clearly mentioned in the rules that every registered medical practitioner should prescribe medicines with generic names to the patients who come to them.. and should not prescribe unnecessary medicines and irrational fixed dose combination tablets. If the doctors violate these, they will be warned and directed to attend the workshops. In case of repeated violations, the doctor’s license will be suspended.
On the other hand, the National Medical Commission has stated in the latest regulations that the names of medicines should be written in capital letters in the medicine slip written by doctors. In the current situation, every person has to spend a large part of his income on health. The prices of generic drugs are 30 to 80 percent lower compared to generic drugs. In this context, the National Medical Commission has revealed in the latest regulations that by prescribing generic medicines, the costs will be reduced and quality health care will be provided to all the people.
