Do you know how much time has been reduced with the advent of FASTag?
In 2018-19, each vehicle had to wait an average of 8 minutes at the toll plazas. After the introduction of Fastag, that time was reduced to 47 seconds. It can be said to be a revolutionary reform in road management. However, still the toll plazas located near the metro cities have heavy vehicular traffic at times. During festivals, the traffic at toll plazas on key highways is heavy. Center hopes to check this through ‘automatic toll payment system’.
Two options at the center..
In a program last month, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that 2 options are being considered to reduce congestion at the toll plaza. One of them is GPS tracker in vehicles. The second is the number plate recognition system. Satellite has to be used for toll fee payments through GPS. Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras make this task even easier in number plate recognition mode.
Analysts are of the opinion that the second option is slightly better. It is said that whatever approach is chosen, the results will depend on how it is implemented and how fraud is controlled. After the implementation of FASTAG, the toll revenue has increased significantly.
“We will select some technology soon. Although no official decision has been taken yet, once the number plate technology is available, there will be no more toll plazas. The advanced computerized digital system brings great relief to motorists. Nitin Gadkari said that there will be no queue at the toll plazas.
Nitin Gadkari said that the ministry aims to implement Intelligence Traffic System (ITS) on 15,000 km of national highways by 2024 to strengthen road safety. He explained that there is a plan to build special roads and corridors for electric vehicles in the future.
