The war between the US and TikTok has a new chapter, and that is that the city of New York has prohibited that all public employee devices that have been given by any institution of the city council are strictly prohibited from downloading the Chinese social network.
In this last year, and with TikTok eating up and revolutionizing the social media market, The US is trying to reduce the use of this app among its citizens. This according to them, they do it for protect the privacy of users, since the data that the platform collects and who has access to it can be worrying.
Although also, and despite the fact that they do not say it, everything seems to indicate that they do not like that a Chinese social network is taking over from the American ones like Instagram, Twitter (now X) or Facebook. That is why little by little, different states, cities or even institutions they are vetoing the use of TikTok to the extent they can.
We saw it with the state of Montana, which prohibited its use on official devices, or at Auburn University (Texas), which blocked access to this platform if you connected from its WiFi. And now, as indicated by The Verge, New York City is also extending the ban to all devices issued to public workers.
In turn, for those who already have the app downloaded on their devices, They will have up to 30 days to delete it.
“While social media is great for connecting New Yorkers with each other and with the city, we need to ensure that we are always using these platforms safely,” a New York City Council spokesperson said in a statement “NYC Cyber Command regularly explores and advances proactive measures to keep New Yorkers’ data safe.”
Recall that, at the end of March of this year, the CEO of the app himself, Shou Zi Chew, appeared before the United States Congress to answer questions from congressmen about how TikTok worked, what data it collected and who had access to it. them, among other things.
However, the explanations failed to convince and left even more doubts, which seemed to mean that TikTok’s days were numbered in the US. But several months have passed since then, and it is now, the New York City ban, the last we know about the country’s relationship with TikTok.
